I graduated from McMaster University with a degree in Fine Art in 1974. I immediately set off on a year long journey through Canada's Northwest followed by most of a year working in Algonquin Park. While I continued to draw and paint, I was seeking a lifestyle as opposed to a career. I wanted to live gently. I wanted to live apart from urban areas. I wanted to be my own boss. I wanted to spend my working hours creatively.

I tend to think visually and one day an image occurred of myself at a workbench, mallet in hand, working on a chair. I jumped in the old Volvo and visited as many old world cabinetmakers as I could locate in Ontario. I learned a lot about the art of cabinetmaking and the business of being self employed. I worked with two young and very skilled furniture builders and then with an older Danish cabinetmaker. I learned a lot in those years and am still challenging myself today with new ideas in both form and function.

Bob was working for a cabinetmaker when we met, but soon after we were married the cabinetmaker retired, and we found ourselves on the road looking for work. We spent time travelling and sleeping in our yellow pick up truck, and after visiting many cabinetmakers the message was clear. "Young couple, start your own shop." That's what we did.

I have always taken responsibility for the majority of the management side of the business, but since our three children are now on their own life journeys, I have become much more involved in the physical work of the business and have taken more steps into design theory. I enjoy the hands-on of working in the shop with tools and lumber and the challenge of finding a practical solution to a design or functional problem. Depending on when you visit us, I may be in the office, in the shop, in my gardens or in the finishing room where I work on faux and hand-brushed finishes.
